When you read about Victoria Gold beginning to build a mine or Alexo getting ready to put an old mine into production, the part of the story which is not obvious is where the workers for those mines are going to come from. Yukon’s population is roughly 36,000 people. Not very many.
Modern mining work requires a decent education. Modern techniques involve everything from GPS to remote control machines to precision drilling and blasting. For Yukoners to fill the jobs mining is creating they need to go to school and do well in school.
Enter Tara Christie (of Banyan Gold (V.BYN)) and her crew at Every Student, Every Day. This well supported Yukon charity works with Yukon schools to boost student attendance. It may seem obvious, but a day of school missed pushes a student behind.
In a press release issued today to announce that Every Student, Every day had raised $60,000 for its programs, Christie is quoted as saying. “Students who miss 20 days of school each year beginning in Kindergarten miss the equivalent of a full school year by the end of Grade 8,” continued Christie. “We are working diligently with our partners to address this statistic and are appreciative of our community for their continued commitment to our efforts.”
We post the entire press release below.
This is the sort of smart community engagement which is making the Yukon a leader in the often complex world of corporate social responsibility and ongoing social licence.
Victoria Gold’s Every Student, Every Day Raises Over $60K to Support Yukon Student Attendance Initiatives
Whitehorse, Yukon – Victoria Gold Corp.’s Every Student, Every Day volunteer-driven, registered charity to raise funds and awareness to address student attendance challenges throughout the territory raised over $60,000 on Saturday, September 30 at a sold out dinner and auction at the Wheelhouse Restaurant.
The sixth annual event brought together attendees from the business, education and mining sectors and the funds raised will directly support grass roots, community generated student attendance initiatives in Yukon schools, communities and First Nations.
“On behalf of our volunteer board, I extend sincere thanks to the event attendees, sponsors, auction donors and community partners for their generosity and support for our territory’s students,” said Victoria Gold Yukon Student Encouragement Society President Tara Christie. “This was a record year in terms of our fundraising efforts and we are very grateful for the overwhelming response that will directly benefit Yukon students, which are of course, our territory’s future. Thanks to our volunteers and everyone who attended to make it such a great event.”
Since it was established in the fall of 2012, Every Student, Every Day, led by the Victoria Gold Yukon Student Encouragement Society (‘Society’) has distributed over $235,000 to benefit 50 student attendance projects in the Yukon. The Society partners with Yukon Education, which contributes $25,000 to the fund each year and administers the Every Student, Every Day fund applications to schools each spring.
“Students who miss 20 days of school each year beginning in Kindergarten miss the equivalent of a full school year by the end of Grade 8,” continued Christie. “We are working diligently with our partners to address this statistic and are appreciative of our community for their continued commitment to our efforts.”
